Nestle’s chocolate candy bars are about to taste even sweeter. And no, it’s not because they are adding more sugar, instead they are making a vow to only use sustainably and ethically sourced cocoa in their products. Starting in 2016 with four of their most popular bars, including Kit-Kats, the company intends to make 100% of their products with sustainable cocoa in the near future.
So, what’s the big deal? Unbeknownst to most consumers, the farming of cocoa, specifically in West Africa, is wrought with poor working conditions and forced labor of children. Knowing that, it kind of makes that chocolate bar less enjoyable, right?
Now, it does appear that Nestle is making this change in their sourcing practice proactively and voluntarily. Other companies lately have not been so lucky as consumers use social media and power of the internet to force these same kind of changes with some well-known brands.
