In Part I of this series, we explored the first of the lame excuses why buyers lack certification:  the good-old “I don’t have time” excuse.  In this Part, we’ll look at another excuse: “I don’t have the money.”

Enrollment in the SPSM Certification Program costs $1,149. That’s more of an expenditure than buying a gumball out of the gumball machine, for sure. But there are a few things that you have to know:

  • Because having the SPSM often results in getting paid a much higher salary, it is an investment that will likely produce returns that far exceed what you pay and will produce returns year after year after year.
  • The Next Level Purchasing Association does offer a pay-as-you-go certification plan that allows you to spread out your payments over time. You can pay separately for each of the components: each of the six online procurement courses, the SPSM Exam, and the application fee. This does end up being a little more expensive, but gives you the flexibility to still start right away if you don’t have the full amount in one lump sum.
  • Most SPSM’s have their certifications funded by their employers. Citing the very same benefits that I outlined at the beginning of this recent webinar I did, SPSM’s have demonstrated how it is in the employers’ best interests to invest in them.
  • Even if you’re unemployed, some states have agencies that will fund your job training and certification. Ask!

If you were able to earn $20,000 more per year but had to invest a mere $1,149 in your education first, wouldn’t it be worth it?

Smart procurement professionals think so.
