"Please let me introduce myself, I am Denise Minnich Purchasing Assistant for Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Good Shepherd is a multifaceted post acute healthcare provider, concentrated on serving the disabled community, by providing comprehensive physical medicine and rehabilitation services.
My responsibilities consist of all aspects of the purchasing process with regard to non-clinical supplies, services and equipment for Good Shepherd.
On a very demanding day, I was alone in the purchasing department, when Good Shepherd's Chief of Nursing contacted me with an emergency medical device service issue. Since medical products and services are customarily some else's purview I understood this was going to be a challenge.
Please bear in mind I did not know the previous history regarding this device and all parties involved were from various locations, communicating via phone and email. Some newly acquired very expensive medical equipment was past due for monthly maintenance, due to lax oversight by its previous owner. If the maintenance could not be preformed there would be extensive damage done to the equipment. This would lead to a tremendous expense to repair or replace the equipment. After contacting the vendor I was told they would not perform the service, as the previous owner, and not Good Shepherd, was listed as their customer.
My next option was to source another vendor who performs this specialty preventative maintenance in our area. After locating a vendor and receiving a verbal commitment, I established them in the vendor file, routed a requisition through the required approval process, and created and transmitted a PO confirming the verbal order. Due to the restricted access to the equipment, it was necessary to coordinate entry for service personnel. The service was subsequently completed and equipment was damage free."
